Sole Purpose

Mission Statement:

Give Your Sole provides less fortunate men, women and children with moderately worn athletic shoes collected at race events nationwide.

With more than 37 million Americans living under the poverty line, the numbers of homeless and unemployed in this country continue to climb.

We’re often asked to “walk a mile in another man’s shoes”, but imagine having to make that journey without any.

Now envision having access to hundreds of mildly worn pairs of shoes, deserted by their owners, and available to distribute to those in need.

Wouldn’t you feel compelled to help?

GIVE YOUR SOLE does.

Founded in 2009 by Brett Byrd, GIVE YOUR SOLE is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to collecting moderately worn athletic shoes at organized race events, and distributing them to the less-fortunate in the local community.

A runner himself, Brett came to observe while participating in various races, that after a limited amount of miles, athletic shoes lose the maximum efficiency for runners’ specialized needs and tend to be discarded, though they still remain a totally viable pair of footwear.

Establishing a presence at marathons and half-marathons in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Diego, San Jose, Phoenix, and so on, GIVE YOUR SOLE has already collected literally thousands of pairs of shoes.

Partnering with local shelters in each of those cities, the effects of the shoe redistribution are felt immediately and locally.

Beyond the inherit ‘REUSE what’s already available’ philosophy at the core of GIVE YOUR SOLE, the organization carries it’s environmental commitment through to the RECYCLE step.

Since statistically only one in one hundred shoes get recycled, otherwise ending up in landfills, whatever shoes aren’t fit for reallocation, GIVE YOUR SOLE donates to NIKE’s re-use a shoe program, that breaks down and recycles all of the shoes’ materials.

GIVE YOUR SOLE has recognized an existing resource, adapted itself to tap into it, and acts as a liaison to the distributors dedicated to reaching those in need, because the best way to help someone get back on their feet, is by offering them a pair of shoes to stand in.

“The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’ Matthew 25:40
