Tom Wicus / Director of East Operations

There are some friends in life that we meet and remain in contact with for life.  Tom is one of those friends.  Tom and I met in the hospitality industry back in 1994 working for T.G.I.Fridays of all places.  That’s right!  We had the “flare” and all the buttons to prove it.  Not something I feel too confident bragging about, but part of our history nonetheless.

Being from Chicago makes Tom a huge Chicago Cubs fan which should tell you something about his spirit and work ethic; he’s empathetic and doesn’t give up if he puts his mind to something.   Tom had a personal goal and began working in the fashion industry where he spent time in Miami, Chicago and eventually decided to reside in New York City.  I know what you’re thinking; how can a guy call himself a Cubs fan and live in New York!  I’m still trying to figure that one out myself….

Tom spends his days writing for various sources in New York City and finds inspiration in people who surround him.  He has also had a continuous enthusiasm for fitness, humanity and most importantly making a difference, which is the reason Tom has decided to join Give Your Sole.  Residing in New York makes him perfect to head up operations for the East Coast.

I am extremely excited to be working with Tom again.  His passion and drive is contagious and inspiring to say the least.  I know having him on board will help grow Give Your Sole and reach many more people who need help.

Who would have ever thought that by becoming friends back in 1994 we would end up working together to grow a great non-profit named Give Your Sole.  I guess Abraham Lincoln said it best, ‘If you are to win a man to your cause first make him your friend’.

As a person who is trying to get a non-profit off the ground I cannot help but to keep returning to this organization and finding inspiration.  For that reason I feel the need to share charity: water with those of you that have been so wonderful in supporting Give Your Sole.  In this day of economic turmoil it is easy for people to find reasons not to donate money to a cause.  One look at this and you will think again.  You might ask yourself why am I promoting another non-profit when I am trying to get Give Your Sole off the ground. The answer is really quite simple, for a couple reasons.  Those that do good work, incredible work, need to be recognized for it and rewarded for the time, effort and sacrifice they have given to further their cause.  Another reason is the more people that know about this organization the more lives it will change and hopefully save, pure and simple.

As I work to raise money for Give Your Sole I begin to understand the incredible accomplishments and obstacles that charity: water has overcome to get where they are.  Even though they are an established successful non-profit organization it doesn’t mean that their work is done by any means.  It is estimated that 1.1 billion people on the planet don’t have access to safe, clean drinking water.

People will always be in need of food, water, shelter and clothes.  I encourage you to see what charity: water is doing and how you can make a difference.  I guarantee your water will taste different after donating to such a great cause.

Brett ByrdDear Supporters,

A lot has taken place since I started Give Your Sole (GYS) this year.  I can’t believe the many blessings I’ve had and the great people that I’ve met in such a short time of being up and running.  From everyone at Competitor Group who gave me the first opportunity to get the name “Give Your Sole” out there in the running community to the two young ladies that flew all the way from New York and brought their shoes with them to donate.  The feedback from everyone I met at the show and meet in passing has been extremely positive.

As GYS awaits the approval or our 501 (c) 3 status I find myself getting more and more excited with each event I attend.  I know we are on the right track to building Give Your Sole into a great non-profit organization that will help many people in need.  During this time in our nation we all face many obstacles and most of them financial.  Give Your Sole is no different.  To be honest, I find it hard at times to ask people for monetary donations because I know the hard work it takes to make money in order to provide for our families.

One of the great aspects of Give Your Sole is that you can make a huge difference in someone’s life by just donating your shoes. The time has come that I need to ask you for more than that.  People keep asking me, “When are you coming to our city?”  I want to bring Give Your Sole to New York, Boston, Houston, San Jose, San Francisco, Arizona, New Orleans, Seattle and the list goes on.

Your monetary donations are essential in the growth of Give Your Sole.  The money you send will help cover operating costs in order to be able to attend these events and continue to give donated shoes to those in need within your local communities.  Even though we do not have our tax-exempt status quite yet you will still be able to claim your donation.  Include your email with your donation and once we have been granted our 501 (c) 3 status I will email you a letter confirming our approval and a thank you note for your donation.

Please click on the above “Donations” tab and then on “Monetary Donations” to see where to send your support.  I cannot begin to thank all of you who have shown such amazing support to Give Your Sole and our cause.  It is comforting to know that with your help we will continue to make progress and change lives in the process.  I invite you to be a part of our growth and invest in our cause.

With many thanks,

Brett

Taken from the Sears Tower

We are thrilled to be taking a part in the Chicago Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon this summer.  For all of you that will be lucky enough to experience not only a great event but a great city we look forward to seeing you there.  We will have a booth at the expo on July 31st and August 1st where we will be collecting moderately worn mens, women’s, and children’s athletic shoes.  We will also be at the finish line on race day, August 2nd, collecting your “Race Day Shoes”.  Those donating the pair right off their feet on RACE DAY ONLY will receive a free pair of Give Your Sole flip flops so you won’t be bare foot.

All the shoes donated at this event will go to the MorningStar Rescue Mission in Joliet to help those that are less fortunate.  Please make it a point to bring those shoes you don’t need anymore.    Chances are somebody can use them.  Making a difference in someone else’s life will make a difference in yours.

Humble Legend

Me with Olympic Gold Medalist, Frank Shorter

The incredible thing about attending the expo before race day is not all the cool new gear you can buy or all the freebies you can cram into your expo bag.  It’s the experience to see and interact with running legends in an environment they thrive in.  To know as much as they do in the field they have lived and breathed for years makes them EXPERTS and many times FAMOUS.  Some people would let all that go to their head….not Frank Shorter.

I was lucky enough to meet Mr. Shorter at the San Diego Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon.  Here is a man who put running on the map in the 70′s; a Yale grad with too many accomplishments to list.  He is best known for winning the gold in the Marathon at the 1972 Munich Olympics. After being inducted into the Olympic Hall of Fame, the National Track and Field Hall of Fame, and the National Distance Running Hall of Fame and running for the better part of his life you think the last thing he would want to do is talk about running to a complete stranger.

Mr. Shorter and I not only talked a little about running but more about children in sports. His idea of letting children gravitate to the sport they prefer on their own is one that many parents need to get on board with, especially in this day and age.  Having two sons of my own I have to agree with him. This quote from Mr. Shorter says it best, “When you are caring about your children perhaps you always have to remember at what point you can become over involved because of something you need rather than something the child needs.”

No doubt about it, Frank Shorter is a legend and a man of humility.  Thank you for your time Mr. Shorter.

Youthful Wisdom

Ryan Hall and myself

Ryan Hall and myself

The story, The Power and The Glory, written in Runners World Magazine about Ryan Hall sheds light on what really makes him tick.  For a young man of 26 to realize the gifts that the Lord has given him and the wisdom to know what to do with those gifts is pretty inspiring.  We all struggle at times to figure out what it is we are meant to do in life.  Only a few will decide at a young age what their calling is; some might struggle for years to find it. To be unsure about where you’re headed in life is normal.  What’s detrimental is being stagnant and ignoring the gifts that God has given you.  Stagnation creates laziness and laziness breeds disappointment.

Jim Elliot, another wise man of 26, said it best, “Wherever you are – be all there.”  Not only is it important to be physically active to keep in good health but to be spiritually diligent is crucial in finding peace in all you do as well.
