Running 13.1 at Venice Beach! What could be better!

Running 13.1 at Venice Beach! What could be better!

We are excited to be participating in the Inaugural 13.1 Marathon Los Angeles event taking place January 10th, 2010.  This event is to be a sure hit since US Road Sports & Entertainment Group are behind it.  US Road Sports & Entertainment Group are also known for the ING Miami Marathon, ING Georgia Marathon and the Chicago Half Marathon.  They are kicking off 2010 with one of eight 13.1 Marathon races taking place from Los Angeles to Fort Lauderdale.

Not only is this going to be a great race series but to make it even better World Vision is the major charity sponsor for the series. We will be sharing booth space with Team World Vision near the finish line area on race day, January 10th from 6am-2pm where we will be collecting shoes.  We recommend that you either check the shoes you want to donate at bag check at the beginning of the race and pick them up when you finish or have someone who is there to cheer you on bring them to our booth.  For runners who want to donate the shoes you run in right off your feet we will give you a FREE pair of Give Your Sole flip flops (while supplies last) so you won’t go away barefoot!

All the shoes we collect will be donated to help those in need at the Union Rescue Mission.  The Union Rescue Mission (URM) is one of the largest missions of its kind in America–bringing help and hope to homeless and desperately poor men, women, and children of downtown Los Angeles.  In L.A., there are up to 142,000 men, women and children who are homeless over the course of a year and up to 74,000 people are homeless each night in Los Angeles County. URM provides many services from Emergency Assistance to their Hope Gardens Family Center which has a long track record of success in stabilizing and returning broken families to society.

So if you are running this event for a cause or not you can be sure that when you finish there will be one waiting for you ready to take your shoes.  Join us in working to provide those in need with as many shoes possible.

Sunrise Over Lake Michigan

Sunrise Over Lake Michigan

The dictionary describes the word ‘thankful’ as being pleased and relieved.  To be honest I never really thought of being ‘thankful’ as a form of relief.  At times we take for granted the things we have until a holiday like Thanksgiving comes along and makes us take a break from our busy lives to really think about what it is in our lives that give us ‘relief’.

For me, there are many things that give me relief.  My wife gives me relief from a life of being alone and without love. My kids give me relief from a life without pure joy.  God gives me relief from a life without unconditional love.  My job gives me relief from a life without the means to provide for the ones I love.  My health gives me relief to experience the outdoors and everyday tasks that get me through the day.  The service men and women who do all they can to protect this great nation give me relief from a life of worry.  My mom and dad give me relief from a life without support should my world come crumbling down.  My friends give me relief from not having people around to share in my goals and journeys.  The list could go on and on…

The only problem with experiencing such great relief is that with it comes the realization that 3 million people across this nation can’t say the same for their lives.  While I say a prayer of thanks for all I have been given relief from, I will also say a prayer for those who are struggling to find food, shelter and most of all love.

For if we can find love, we find hope and if we can find hope, we find relief.
